I have been looking to get my rear arches repaired and painted. One is bubbling all the way round, but the other has just two small areas. Took it to a body shop on Friday and the gentleman siad that one would need to be welded and the other probably just treated and painted. This backs up a previous quote i had done where the gentleman said the same thing.

However, what shocked me was the price. He said 280 pounds for both sides. At first i thought he meant 280 pounds a side. This includes repainting the sill to remove some marks.

He said all the righ things. Said he seem welded the inner arch to the wing to stop water getting behind the gap, said he never had rust come back and he knew the rust was caused by the bonding material on the inner arch cracking over time.  Supprisinlgy he was so confident hed never had rust come back that he would give a one year guarantee. Which, is somthing not many body shops would do.

So the question is, do you think it sounds a bit cheap? Can yo get a good job for this price? There was nothing that put me off the guy until i heard the price. I asked him and he just said he doesnt have any fancy expensive overheads.

What do you think?

Thats a damned good price, what sort of guarantee is he prepared to give.

have you ever thought about using some of that clear protective film in high use areas?

One year full guarantee, so if the rust returns in that time he will redo the work. If the rust hasnt bubbled back through by then i doubt it woill come back at all. The bubble usually return within a few months if the rust is still alive in my experience.

On my rally car i am going to use clear protectakote. Its a polyeurethane floor covering that is 'rubberised'. Its now available in clear. Im going to paint the inner arches body work colour (red) then use the clear coating over the top to protect from stone chips.
