Painting / rust removal question
«

I've been reading up on the guides here as I need to treat some rust.
If dealing with parts of the car that require 'stone chip' then is the order Primer then Stone Chip then paint, or, Stonechip, then primer then paint?
In summary, which comes first, the primer or the stone chip?
What are people using for the final 449 Blue? Halfords don't seem to stock this colour. A mate who works in a body shop has said there's a place that'l mix the right colour and stick it in a spray can for me but was just wondering all the same. I think I remember Rob mentioning that a mix of blue and black hammerite does the trick?
Thanks!

For me if re-stone chipping id prefer to take it back to bare metal then apply a zince based primer, followed by the stonechip, primer, basecoat then laquer.
As for paint i used paints4u.com havent had time to try it yet though

Yeah i would agree with graham. Take it back to metal. Then apply a primer that will etch into the metal. Then a stone chip primer. Then whatever you want ontop of that. Usually undercoat and / or top coat then laquer.
I am no pro, but 18 months on, the arches i did myself are still fine, the ones we took to the body shop needed my attention.
You can get sprays made up in most body shops. If its only temporary, yes blue and black hammerite kind of blends in if you want to stop it getting worse.
I would get the filling / priming / stone chipping done, then worry about making it look good after you have sealed out any chance of deterioration.
Also, dont forget to seal any seams with something like a brush on seam sealer. Always worth going over the renault factory ones again, as the sealer will be dry and crack now.

Brillliant, thanks guys, I've been reading the guides and been on rust.com (or co.uk). already got dome hydrate 80 and deox gel, was going to get some Bilt Hamber Electrox or RustBuster epoxy Mastic for first coat after using those. Then Can I effectively just paint or need normal primer first? If using the stone chip I'll use stonechip for the second coat (after hydrate 80), then normal primer then paint (Plus laquer where req'd).
Much apreciated, I have a runabout now so can sort these things. I've a very rotten underside arouund where the towing eye is attacked and where the petrol tank is attached on other side, was worried it may me irrepairable but my garage guy specialises in that sort of repair and seems to think it'll be no problem(he built someone a new TVR chasis and is into restoring things like mark1 escorts to better than factory condition). Haven't got a quote yet though untill I take it in at the weekend.

If you use stone chip primer, i dont think youll need a primer over the top of that. The one i use is straight to metal, then paint straight over it, no other primer needed.

And obviously dont buy one of the tar anti stone chips. These are the sort that you srpay under the car to stop rust. You need a stone chip primer that sets. Like the one i use.

Dynax is a good cavity wax and hydrate 80 is a rust converter so if metal cleans back well enough then id go down the electrox or etchweld route
