This doesn't seem to work for me, it just says no new posts since my last visit when there actually is.

well i get the 2 different icons, yellow cross turns to solid blue when there are new posts, and in the forum category i get a "new" symbol beside it

Something that else that bothers me, after posting in a thread from the 'new posts' list it redirects you back to the sub-forum the thread was from.

Ok, goto profiles, look and layout and preferences, look for
Return to topics after posting by default.
Put a tick in that box then click save changes, that should do it
