I realise on CS you only have 5 posts per day so happy to have a bit of fun about why a Williams 1 is better than a 2 and 3. Also, why a Trophy is better than a Williams 2 and 3 but not a Williams.

I left the topic open ended as I feel it may involve other hot hatchs in this discussion very soon also.

Hi Jamie, not sure who the CS thing is aimed at as i have only posted on there 10 or so times in the 5 years of Williams ownership.

My take on the whole thing and this is just my opinion of course is as follows.

I know the Williams isnt the first Renault hot hatch so for me the best of the non limited vehicles would have to be a turbo2 but thats a different thing altogether.

Now as far as your debate, the winner for me will always be the Williams, I guess because of the plaque even though they werent applied in any specific order regarding build order, i know the trophy has a plaque too which for collectability would make it a close 2nd and the mk1 & 2 v6 for the same reason above.

For me the plaque of a williams makes it more desirable than a williams 2 even though the 2 had a few nice refinements that hasnt really detracted from the original car ie original 449 coliur and no hole in the roof and its for the 432 paint and sunroof that brings the williams 3 in 3rd place of the 3 original cars.

Now as you would expect and no disrespect to the trophy as its a lovely car but technology has moved on from the williams days as has the 30+ increase in bhp so i dont see how these 2 cars both fantastic in their own right can really be comparable to each other in an honest way.

Of course all 172/182 owners will say their car is better than the williams and in the majority of tests/ specs it will be BUT the williams is the original and its that word that will make a lot of people yearn for one.

The opinions of 172/182/trophy owners is valid if theyve owned a Williams i the past, but ive seen so many arguments by people on CS saying their 172/182 is much better than a williams full stop, without them even owning/driving one.

Now ive never owned a Trophy/172 or a 182 so you can say my argument isnt valid for the reversal of the above reason, but i dont slate the newer cars and respect the advances in technology and improvements in power.

So for the above reasons im going to list the cars in desirability order, of course its just my opinion, i am intitled to one like everyone else.

  • Williams
  • Trophy
  • V6
  • Williams 2
  • Williams 3
  • 16v
  • 182
  • 172

I know on CS that little list will get me verbally slaughtered but i dont care, im 41 on sunday so im too old for their nonsense, as ive already stated for me its about desirability and rariety combined thats purely why my list is the way it is.

Graham.

I like rare cars. Thats my first priority when buying one. I dont want to see other similar cars on the road.

For that reason a decent Clio Williams is a better car for me than the trophy.

Just as the renault turbo 2 is a better car than the clio v6 255.

If i didnt drive a clio williams i would be driving a ford racing puma for the same reason.

I think the only car i would like to own over my Williams 2 is Clio V6.

The 172/182's just don't stand out enough IMO.

Even today the Williams turns heads and gets people asking about it.
